biography

an excerpt from Star Szene ´77 ....

michel polnareff, son of the russian composer leo poll, was born in paris 1944. aged 3, he began playing the piano and with 12, he already won his first award at the music academy paris.
very early he split from his family to go his own way. he wrote songs, sang in the streets and painted on the trottoirs ....
the publisher rolf marbot discovered him in 1965. by then, "michel le hippie" had already written about 200 songs.
success came over night: the songs "La poupee qui fait non" and "Love me, please, love me" made it into the european charts.
but he wanted to be more than just a schlager singer: a respected composer. he got there when the famous actor and director jean-louis barrault asked him to write the music for the classical theatre play "rabelais".
today michel polnareff is popular worldwide. his last tour of japan was triumphant: he filled the 16,000 seats of tokyo´s biggest theatre - the butokan - several days in a row. not even the beatles drew such crowds.

the king of the ants ... some notes

born 1944 - in paris? other sources say in the little town of Neyrac in the south of france on july 3rd, 1944.
his first hits around 1967 - la poupee ..., love me ...., ta ta ta ta .....
likely to be found on german schlager compilations, sometimes even in german ...
these are the straight ones. stranger stuff on his albums.
great melodies - the raw material for 3 nick cave songs is found in michel´s holidays.
the opening track of 1971´s polnareff´s, voyages, manages to combine french chanson, american gangster film soundtracks, church organ, pre-disco (and what else not) in 2mns52secs.

polnarevolution live: the complete frenzy of dans la maison vide, the bullshit improvisation of boogie woogie ... .... the opening chords of love me ... stretched to a micro-eternity.
arrogance is a virtue.

the mid-70s find michel in hollywood - the american phase:
.... way out song titles and lyrics as ever ...
...let me be your jesus for tonite / i´ll make you believe .....
the pseudo-disco of lipstick.
where is he now?
